PROFESSOR Ann Oaks received an M.A. (1977)
in mathematics and a Ph.D. (1987) in mathematics education at the University
of Rochester. Her interests center on gender issues and conception as factors
which influence mathematical behavior. In 1979, she started teaching at Hobart and William Smith
Colleges. During her time here, she designed three courses which
focus on the process of mathematical reasoning -- Discovering in Mathematics,
a writing course for non-majors designed to emphasize mathematics as a creative
endeavor; First Steps into Advanced Mathematics, which engages
potential majors in the creative process of developing mathematical conjectures
and proofs; and the Seminar for Mathematics Teachers, an upper-level
course focused on the process of mathematical problem solving. Oaks has
published articles on gender, mentoring, and conception of mathematics.
Professor Oaks retired from the department in June 2003. However,
she will likely continue to teach an occasional course from time to time.
