Alumni Focus:

Vince Cassano '91

This is the seventh in a series of Alumni Focus features where we hear from alumni of the Mathematics and Computer Science Department and find out what they have been doing since graduation. This note is from Vince Cassano '91, who was recently on campus to speak to students about his career as an actuary.

Vince writes...

I graduated from Hobart in 1991 and worked for a couple years as a technical writer for an engineering firm in NC before heading to graduate school. I studied Applied Mathematics at Dartmouth and earned a Masters Degree in 1995.

I worked at Aon Consulting in NC for two years and William M. Mercer in Rochester for 6 years before taking the job with EBS. I finished my Enrollment exams in 2000 and my Fellowship exams in 2001.

I am currently a pension actuary with EBS Benefit Solutions in Fairport. I provide consulting services to roughly 25 pension and postretirement medical plans. I am a Fellow in the Society of Actuaries, a Member of the American Academy of Actuaries, a Fellow in the Conference of Consulting Actuaries and an Enrolled Actuary under ERISA. The Employee Retirement Income Security Act of 1974 (ERISA) is a federal law that sets minimum standards for most voluntarily established pension and health plans in private industry to provide protection for individuals in these plans.

I am married to Roz Yard Cassano who is a 1990 graduate of William Smith and have two children, Riesa - age 6 and Cole - age 4. We live in Bushnell's Basin, NY. In my free time I serve as principal clarinetist for the Genesee Symphony Orchestra and the Livingston Symphony Orchestra (formerly called the Avon Symphony Orchestra). I am also a brewer, and a member of UNYHA (Upstate NY Homebrewers Association). I manage to send some entries to a few annual competitions and pick up a medal now and again. The latest experiment has been Mead, which is still fermenting---it should be ready to bottle in January sometime.
