New Computers for Math/CS Lab

Installing the new computers ON APRIL 8, 1999, NINE NEW COMPUTERS were installed in the computer lab of the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science. The new computers have 500 megahertz Pentium III central processing units and 128 megabytes of random access memory. The computers will be running the Linux operating system, which is also used on the department's server computer. These computers, like the server, will be used by students who are enrolled in computer science courses.

The Math/CS computing lab was established in 1991 with 16 Macintosh IIsi computers. The funding for the lab was provided by a grant from the National Science Foundation, with matching funds and renovation costs provided by Hobart and William Smith Colleges. A few years later, a second grant added three Sun workstations to the lab, and just last year a grant from the John Ben Snow Memorial Trust paid for extensive renovation and refurnishing of the lab. However, the number and quality of computers in the lab had dwindled as machines reached the end of their useful life. The nine new computers, which were purchased with College funds as part of its regular program of equipment replacement and renewal, restore the lab to the leading edge of computer performance.
