Visiting Japan: Trying Everything

I was very fortunate to have the opportunity to spend two weeks in Japan in the summer of 1995. The trip was sponsored by the Tanaka Ikueikai Educational Trust. Four students and one advisor from each of five liberal arts colleges were invited to spend two weeks enjoying a unparalleled introduction to Japan. The trip was wonderful and I look forward to returning to Japan to see all the things I could not see during this trip and meet even more people.

If you get a chance to visit Japan, I recommend looking for the various temples and shrines that are found literally everywhere. They contain some of the most interesting architecture and delightful insights into Japan. Below you will find just a few of the dozens of photos I took during our trip. For those prospective travellers to Japan, I will pass on the single best piece of advice a colleague gave me. Try everything!

Try the unusual and delicious food (the miso is very highly recommended), drink, language, sights, and sounds of Japan.

We visited Technos Institute in the outskirts of Tokyo during their International Week. There we had a chance to exchange ideas with our hosts and experience different educational environments. This ranged from riding a solar powered vehicle built by students at Technos to learning how to arrange airline reservations to performing a traditional tea ceremony. Our hosts were wonderful, the accomodations wonderful, the scheduled activities very interesting, and we all enjoyed our visit which was really beyond all praise. All too soon it was time to return home but my memories will always remain. A special thank you to Dr. Tanaka for providing these opportunities and best wishes all the people who made our trip so terrific. Highly recommended. Select these links to download some images.
