PROFESSOR JAIME BARRERA will receive his Ph.D. from Cornell in December 2007 in applied mathematics and has master's degrees from Cornell in applied mathematics and computer science. His focus of study was in the numerical solution of partial differential equations. While at Cornell he taught numerical analysis and introductory programming in the computer science department as a TA. His interests, generally, are in mathematics applied to social, biological, political and physical problems. A parallel vein of research is to explore pedagogical methods for increasing the level of lucidity of students' understanding of mathematical constructions and objects through the use of visualizations. His specialty is in developing fast and accurate methods of numerical solutions to continuous problems for implementation on a computer. He joins the faculty of Hobart and William Smith Colleges in Fall of 2007.
