CS 441, Fall 2004
Final Project

As of November 8, it has been decided that this course will have an optional final project. There are three tests in this course, two midterms and a final exam. If you do a final project, your grade on the project will replace your lowest test grade.

The final project will consist of a presentation (15 minutes to one-half hour in length) and a research paper (5 pages or more). The presentation will take place during the last week of classes. The paper is due on the last day of class. I expect the paper to use a number of sources. In particular, if you are doing a topic that is covered in our textbook, you should not simply report on what is said in the book.

Each person will do a project on a different topic. If you want to do a final project, you must decide on a topic and get it approved by me before the Thanksgiving break.

Some possible topics are listed below. I am open to considering other possibilities, provided they are appropriate for the course.

  1. Firewalls (see Section 8.6)
  2. PKI (public key infrastructure)
  3. SSH (secure shell)
  4. Internet 0 (See http://cba.mit.edu/projects/I0/)
  5. Cellular technology
  6. Bluetooth (Personal Area Networks)
  7. Network Management with SNMP (see Chapter 9)
  8. Multimedia Networking (see Chapter 7)
  9. Broadband Internet Access Technologies; DSL and Cable Modem
  10. Network Programming in C with the Socket API
  11. Grid Computing
