Muscles, Tendons, and Nerves

You do it because the sweat and burn make your mind sharper, because jogging along the lake before anyone else is up, when its glittery expanse belongs only to you, a flock of swallows, and the rising sun, makes your head just swim with poetry, inspires you to think harder, clears the fog, and allows for the free associations of ideas.

Exploring the Plethora of Athletic and Organizational Options

Hobart The Statesmen; Orange and Purple.

William Smith The Herons; Green and White.

Crew Heron crews have won the New York State Rowing Champion- ships and have finished in the top three at Small Colleges and Major Univer- sity Nationals. Statesman crews have been in the top five finishers in their events at the Head of the Charles, the New York State Championships, and the Champion International Regatta.

Lacrosse Beginning in 1995, the Hobart Statesmen compete in Division I. AS Division III competitors, they won 16 national titles. William Smith Herons won the New York State Championship six times in seven years and have appeared in the final four of the NCAA championship seven times.

BasketBall The Herons have claimed five Empire Athletic Association titles in recent years, and have made back-to-back NCAA tournament appearences. In 1995, the Statesmen earned their first post-season bid since 1988.

Tennis HWS has an outstanding tennis complex which includes indoor and lighted courts.Statesmen have won five consecutive Empire Athletic Association titles and are considered one of the top Division III teams in the northeast. Heron tennis has also been succesful with a third place conference finish and a sixth-place finish in the state championships in recent years.

Squash The Hobart team has won the Barnaby Award in recognition of their outstanding performance and has ranked in the top fifteen nationally in recent years.

Sailing Though sailing is not a varsity sport, the Colleges' club does compete intercollegiately and is nationally ranked. Sailing is coed.

Cross Country Running One of the newest varsity sports for the Herons, cross coutry nonetheless can boast of four athletes to be honored with Academic All-American awards. Statesmen compete in major invitationals and have consistently improved their standing with each meet.

Soccer Heron soccer has a natioanl reputation. Undefeated seasons have earned the team eight consecutive NCAA tournament bids and one recent national championship. The Statesmen won the Empire Athletic Association title in 1992 and have finished in the top four since then.

Ice Hockey The Statesmen have earned appearances in the ECAC West playoffs. They have been called one of the best kept secrets in small college hockey.

Swimming and Diving Heron swimming and diving has produced 12 All-Americans. The team is a tough competitor each year at the Empire Athletic Association and New York State meets and typically sends atheletes to the NCAA Division III Championships.

Field Hockey The Herons are regulars in the NCAA Division III tournament and earned the national title in 1992.

Football The Statesmen earned their first ever post-season bid in 1993 after compiling a 7-3 record, their best since 1974.
