History

TeX created by Donald Knuth in early 1980s, released in 1984.
TeX provides nice typesetting with great mathematics and a base on which higher-level systems can be built.
LaTeX created in 1985 by Leslie Lamport.
LaTeX makes general document preparation easier, but still provides all of TeX's abilities.
